Pioneer Moment

This is what you pull out when the power goes off and stays off for 8 hours...It made us realize we need to purchase some more since our house is bigger then the one in GJ.  These are 100 hour emergency candles..(thanks Grammy and Grampy)
This is why we bought a house with a fireplace.  We had no heat, so Doug got some very hot burning wood while the boys went and gathered the wood in the middle of our pile (the top wood was wet) and walla...warmth.  Notice the baking potatoes....This is what we learn at camp!  I was surprised that Jacob had never done potatoes this way before.  I mean with 2 years of B.S. camp and being so close to getting an Eagle? You would think they would have taught the boys this...Maybe, instead of always hot dogs and oatmeal, they should cook outside the box?  Hmmmm!

As you can tell, Bryant and I are real happy about cooking outside...in the rain....in the cold.  Good thing I know how to Dutch Oven...thanks Grampy!  I have this awesome charcoal table
(almost ran out of coals...it's on the list of year supply!)
and we waited...we put the table just barely inside the garage with the door open and watched to make sure the coals stayed put...
(I do know how to start a really big fire with coals...that story for another time or read past posts)
I called my dad for advice on what type of bread and thankfully I had a quick bread mix...This time I didn't burn the bottom and everyone was either sooo hungry or really liked them.
Yup, this is how we ate our Sunday dinner.  Doug cooked the London Broil on the grill, potatoes in the fireplace and rolls in the Dutch Oven.  We even sat like we usually do at the table...not on purpose which was totally weird.  Josh was wonderful without TV and sorry, but you can only listen to church music sooooo long.
After dinner, Doug got his guitar out and we all had a good laugh at our ability to play.  Doug is the only one (so far) that plays...the rest of us just strum and make up crazy songs.  We do know how to entertain one another and I think the boys enjoyed it.  Not that they want to do that every week...but I found out, we won't die, we won't starve...there are just little items we needed that I'll be getting eventually.  Other  then that, I thought we were pretty prepared.
WHEW!

Were you unable to find the four battery powered push lights that we gave you 3 or 4 Christmases ago? Have you tried to use the solar oven? It works even on cloudy days. (Just a couple of ideas.) Good luck the next time you have such an emergency. YOU DID GOOD!!!!! Congrats!!!!!
